Do you love it (or do you love the idea of it?)

Do you love it (or do you love the idea of it?)

Burberry. Just saying the name makes me smile.

When I set foot on the beautiful flagship Burberry store in London last winter, I thought to myself, “I am home”. The space was stunning, the service was impeccable, and the coats – oh the coats.

Within two hours of landing in London, I had bought myself a gorgeous Burberry coat. It was love at first sight, so much so that even the $1,500 price tag didn’t sway me from pulling out my Amex. It was full price, but I didn’t care. And trust me, I LOVE a sale. Super excited, I left the store on a high and headed back to Mayfair.

Fast forward six months – and imagine my excitement when I received an email from Burberry about a big sale – 40% off! I’ve always wanted a Burberry bag and this could be my chance! So I made a beeline to Burberry and bought myself a leather satchel.

It was well-constructed and possessed a classic style that I knew would stand the test of time. Was it love at first sight, like it was with my coat? No. But I liked it a lot. And I’ve always wanted a Burberry bag, not to mention how rare it was to find such a big discount.

I got home and excitedly checked out my reflection in the mirror clutching my new Burberry. The bag looked great, but something didn’t feel quite right. I didn’t get the same feeling I had with my coat – that “I can’t wait to wear it” and “I can’t wait to show it to my best friend” feeling.

I definitely liked it, but I didn’t love it. But it was a “good” deal, and it was a lovely bag. “I’m sure I will grow to love it”, I said to myself.

The next morning, I looked over at my new bag sitting neatly on my dresser and thought, “my new Burberry” and smiled. But just seconds later, that same thought returned. And this time, I knew. I didn’t love this bag, and the big discount could not make up for it.

Later the same day, I found myself back at the Burberry store, except this time, to return the bag.

The lesson here: No matter what kind of deal I think I’m getting, don’t buy it unless I really love it. But if I love it – like I do my Burberry coat – then it’s worth paying every penny of its full price. And my coat, like a true love, still makes me smile.❤️
